WHAT IS IN MY CAMERA BAG (2024 EDITION)?
Because I love the technical side of photography (perhaps a little too much), I'm often interested in what other photographers use for their wedding reportage work. For that reason I decided to present my own equipment and approach.
2018
I started my work at the end of 2018 with the Nikon D750 DSLR. Because I was familiar with this type of camera from my father, the handling felt very natural.
Then the first mirrorless cameras began appearing on the market, so I switched to the Fujifilm X-T3. The tactile side of these bodies is really lovely. Having all the controls (aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation, etc.) on physical dials is simply the best way to learn photography.
After two years using Fujifilm gear, I moved to full-frame with Nikon Z6 II cameras. What else can I say? They are great bodies.
2022
During 2022 I decided to reduce my gear in the Passat to an absolute minimum at Leica (Leica SL2 + Leica Q2). The tactile feel and construction of Leica cameras are unmatched. I literally fell in love with that small box. However, since I am not a wide-angle enthusiast, the 28 mm f/1.7 Summilux is simply monstrous.
2023
In 2023 I did the unthinkable and switched again, this time to Sony (while letting my beloved Leica Q2 go). The Leica SL2 with its large sensor only suited me halfway: for my taste it produces too much digital noise in low light, very large files, and an autofocus that can be unwelcome at times — although overall it does its job.

Over the years I’ve steadily pared my gear down to an absolute minimum. The list could be much longer — would you like to see it? Sure, but given my love for photo equipment that would probably go on forever.
I’ve noticed that a large selection of lenses often restricts my creativity. I work much better under certain constraints. That’s why I use only prime lenses: they force me to move and to make deliberate choices to get the image I want.
I like working with two cameras and two clearly different focal lengths (for example 35 mm and 85 mm, or 28 mm and 50 mm). That way I’m prepared for almost any scenario that comes my way — from a wide space to an intimate detail.
In short: gear is ultimately just a tool — like canvas and brushes for a painter. There’s no inherently wrong brand; Sony, Nikon, Canon, Leica … they all make excellent cameras today. What matters is finding the equipment that suits you and your needs best.
